stay gold

when i was searching my bookcase this evening for White Oleander (which i still cant find. grr) my eyes fell upon The Outsiders by SE Hinton which is one of my all-time absolute favoritest books in the entire world. it's been a while since i last read it, so of course i picked it up to reread for the millionth time tonight (this isnt an exaggeration... i have so many parts memorized from the number of times it's been read). i really truly love this book, if you didnt know, and think everyone should read it. i remember a friend and i read it to our class in sixth grade... most of them didnt really appreciate it.

anyways, anyone who has ever written anything in their life has been affected by what they read. the ones that deny it are the ones that usually end up being plagiarists in my experience. until i read The Outsiders tonight, i hadnt really realized what a huge influence it had over my writing. i mean, i always knew it was one influence, but didnt really grasp the extent. i dont steal scenes from SE Hinton and try to incorporate them into my own writing (though i noticed some parts that i apparently did just that :/) but some parts jumped out as what my subconscious mind is always aspiring to live up to while writing, and always falling short of.

it's not just what she writes, but it's how she writes it.

her books arent long, they dont have the fame and popularity of harry potter or twilight, they're not going to be studied in classrooms for all of eternity like the classics, but they are great books.

side note: sorry if my words arent flowing right... i cant seem to get the thoughts to translate into words very well today for some reason.

  1. LOL YOU AND ARWA Z RIGHT?

i'm sad to say i very much disliked the book. and when my brother had to read it and complete some booklet of questions i couldn't even bring myself to help him out. i dunno why? its like how i senselessly hated wicked.

also look up Kaavya Viswanathan, she wrote the book how opal mehti got kissed, and she was slammmeeeddd for plagiarism which she said was just her subconscious honoring her favorite books

  2. lol yup. and i think you're certifiably crazy (i say this with complete respect of the fact that you are entitled to your own opinion lol).

omg i looked up that author and saw on wikipedia all the questionable parts... that is not honoring books, that is completely ripping off the authors. there are so many of them! my ripping off of parts from the outsiders is nowhere even remotely close to that and all happened in the story so i dont think it really counts anyways.

  3. Oh my goodness, I still remember you and Arwa sitting on the stool, I loved it. I remember after you guys finished reading it we moved onto poetry and I wrote a poem from Matt Dillon's character, Dallas? I enjoyed the book, very much. I haven't read it thought, I read That was Then, This is Now though.

Oh, is it weird that I just saw the movie last week? I love the movie, I've seen it at least 5-7 times.

  5. I gave up the poetry at the end of sixth grade, I felt the subject matter seemed dense and it felt like everything's been done before.

Plus I'm not that good a writer and that's why I'm not a writer and why I appreciate you(good) friends' skills and I hope and wish to the stars that you break out of this nutshell and carve your name somewhere in this world. This world needs you.
