got caught up in your talent show

i first heard of susan boyle in a friend's blog, she then spread to the facebook statuses of at least a dozen people i know, conversations with the jazz drummer bus driver, and the most viewed on youtube. so i wasnt exactly surprised to see the first article on digg be about her. read the article, it's a good one. it basically reiterates what was written in my friend's blog, that the human race generally doesnt believe ugly people can have any talent, but with one qualification. it's only "ugly" women that can't. men can look as hideously unattractive as they want, and their talent for anything wont be called into question. and by "ugly women" we obviously mean the ones that dont fall into the hollywood mold.

my favorite part of the article was: "Susan will probably win Britain's Got Talent. She will be the little munter that could sing, served up for the British public every Saturday night. Look! It's "ugly"! It sings! And I know that we think that this will make us better people. But Susan Boyle will be the freakish exception that makes the rule. By raising this Susan up, we will forgive ourselves for grinding every other Susan into the dust. It will be a very partial and poisoned redemption. Because Britain's Got Malice. Sing, Susan, sing - to an ugly crowd that doesn't deserve you."

it's completely true. from now on, if someone is called shallow or judgemental, they'll just say, "but i liked susan," and that will make everything ok. you supported one "ugly" person, so it doesnt matter what you do to the rest of them, you are already a saint.

  1. 'by raising this susan up, we will forgive ourselves for grinding every other susan into the dust.'

that's an excellent one. stupid humans. i was reading scarlet pimpernel and this one line the baroness said in the beginning reminded me of the crazy audience:
'a surging, seething murmuring crowd of beings that are human only in name, for to the eye and ear they seem naught but savage creatures, animated by vile passions and by the lust of vengeance and of hate.'
