sometimes some people go way too far to make a point. dont get me wrong, i totally understand "doing what you have to" but i draw the line at eating body parts. i thought everyone would. apparently not.
on friday, a serb cut off and ate his own finger. why?? as a way to protest overdue wages. the good old days of strikes and picket lines are gone, folks. we have reached the age of cannibalism. apparently the gesture was supposed to reinforce his point that because they are not getting paid, they have no money for food. and what better way to show how desperate you are than to eat yourself?? it just cries out desperation to me.
in an interview, the dude said that while the employees of Raska Holding textile factory of which he was a union leader was discussing what to do to get noticed, a single mom said that she would eat her finger. of course Zoran Bulatovic, being the gentleman that he is, couldnt let her do that. so he did it himself.
now, let's just take a second to think about that. some lady said she was getting so hungry she could eat her finger, so the dude chopped off his hand with a hacksaw and ate it. i'm guessing he's never heard of the art of exaggeration. i'm pretty sure we've all said things like, "if i do bad on this test i'll shoot myself" or whatnot. have any of you met a guy that willingly shoots himself instead to spare you from doing it?? no. because most people realize that stuff like that is not to be taken seriously.
then again, the single mom might very well have meant to eat her own finger. apparently, the employees had gone on a hunger strike before they got desperate enough for this. understand though, they didnt go on a normal strike. they still came to work and did their jobs. they just did it hungry. doesnt seem like a very smart way to get noticed. and when youre complaining that you have no money for food, isnt every day like a hunger strike anyways?? how would the employers know the difference??
Bulatovic has said that they would postpone any other self-mutilations until after the talks scheduled for today with the government. for the sake of all the fingers being employed by this serbian textile company, i sincerely hope that the employees get paid. and fast.
